2 New Asylum Films Revealed!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, I've been mega-busy, but in my absence, there have been two new Asylum flicks announced, both of which sound pretty rad.

First up, there's AE: Apocalypse Earth, from writer director Thunder Levin (American Battleship Warships, upcoming Sharknado), which tells the following story: A group of refugees from Earth land on an exotic planet, where they must fight ruthless aliens to survive.

A jungle-centric sci-fi adventure is always a good time in my book - see 100 Million BC, Alien Origin et al - especially given the cast: TV Highlander Adrian Paul, returning favorite Richard Grieco (Almighty Thor), and a newcomer, Costa Rican supermodel Bali Rodriguez, seen in this photo from the film's Facebook page. 

I thought American Warships was a really tight action film, better than the piece of shit that sued it, and Levin's earlier work for the studio, writing 2010's 200MPH, was also impressive, and there's no denying the man's a mad genius just for the concept of Sharknado, let alone whatever instant masterpiece it will be, so count my hopes high indeed at the prospect of what this could be. 

Next up there's Barrio Pitfighter, a hard-brawlin' ruckus from writer/director Jose Montesinos, who directed 2011's scintillatingly-awesome Barely Legal - thank you, sir - and reads as thus: A struggling martial arts teacher must compete in an underground fight ring in order to save his brother from a crime boss and reunite with his family. 

The films stars Marco Antonio Alvarez, Dennis Ruel, and one Morgan Benoit, who's a Master of Long Fist Kung Fu according to his IMBD page, so expect some severe badassery from this flick. 

AE: Apocalypse Earth is slated for release on May 28th of this year, with Barrio Pitfighter dropping less than a month later, on June 25th.

With the World Premiere of American Warships occurring this Saturday night at 9 p.m. on SyFy (DVD to follow the next Tuesday), for the last few days we here at Committed have been spotlighting the talent behind this upcoming Naval/Alien clash of the titans. Already we've profiled the film's incredible stars, Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers, and now we turn to the talent behind the camera, the man responsible for American Warships, writer/director Thunder Levin.

Though he's been in the industry for more than 20 years, Levin didn't come to The Asylum until just last year, when he penned the script for the street-racing actioner 200MPH. Before his work with The Asylum, Levin also wrote and directed the film Mutant Vampire Zombies From the 'Hood, a horror-comedy (obviously) starring 5-time Asylum-alum C. Thomas Howell (War of the Worlds, War of the Worlds 2, The Da Vinci Treasure, The Day the Earth Stopped, The Land That Time Forgot). Levin has also worked as an editor and a still photographer.

American Warships marks Levin's first trip behind the camera for The Asylum, but I'd be willing to bet it won't be his last. Check out Levin's masterpiece-to-date, American Warships, this Saturday, May 19th on SyFy at 9 p.m., then on DVD and Blu-Ray the Tuesday after that, May 22nd.

Super Cyclone Just Got a Lot More SUPER!!! Casting News!!!

While there's nothing up on their site as of yet, according to The Asylum's Facebook and Twitter feed, there's a bit of news about their upcoming disaster flick, Super Cyclone, and believe me when I tell you guys, you're gonna love this.

Cast as one of the two female leads is the lovely and talented AnnaMaria Demara, the very same lovely and talented actress you voted as last year's Best Supporting Actress in the 2011 Loonies for her star-making turn in 200MPH. No word on who the other lead will be, or what exactly the plot is, but does it matter? This one's already made it's money back.

First Stills and Poster From American Battleship! Van Peebles! Weathers! Really Big Guns!!!

Today, The Asylum released the poster, and on their Flickr page the first production stills, from their upcoming alien-naval skirmish/Battleship tie-in, American Battleship. From the look of things, we've got ourselves a full-blown action epic on our hands.

The film - written and directed by Thunder Levin, who penned last year's awesome 200MPH - boasts a powerhouse cast including Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Full Eclipse, BAADASSSSS) and Carl Weathers (Rocky, Predator, Happy Gilmore), as well as the lovely and surely talented Johanna Watts. Furthermore, the announcement gives us a little more details as to the film's plot: "Johanna Watts (left) plays Navy Lieutenant Caroline Bradley, who along with Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers, must use the United States last remaining battleship to fight an elusive and powerful enemy that threatens the entire planet."

Pretty rad, if you ask me. Especially since they used a real battleship, the U.S.S. North Carolina, and filmed in that same state, Wilmington, to be precise, which also happens to be the state I was born and raised in. So, count me doubly excited: a new Asylum flick, and bringing more entertainment jobs to the Old North State.  

American Battleship hits DVD and Blu-Ray on May 15th.

First Details on BATTLESHIPS...Now AMERICAN BATTLESHIP!

Big day today, not only do we get Nazis at the Center of the Earth stills, now we have cast, crew and plot details for American Battleship!

We already knew the film was being directed by Thunder Levin, the writer behind this year's 200MPH, but now we know the story he's working with:

"When a fleet of mysterious ships wage war against the Earth, only the crew of the USS Iowa, the last American battleship, can prevent global armageddon."

Pretty cool plot, loosely tied in to the Peter Berg Battleship out this summer. The real cool stuff here is the casting; dig: Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, bitches) and Carl Weathers (don't make me tell you), as well as JoHanna Watts, best know for Mutant Vampire Zombies From the 'Hood, also written and directed by Thunder Levin.

Side note, this one was filmed way across the country off the coast of my home state, North Carolina. I don't really have a point here - we have good battleship water? - I just wanted to shout out NC. Hold 'em, Heels.


Back to the matter at hand, all in all, this makes for a pretty rad action/sci-fi flick. Now all we have to do is wait until May 15th, 2012 to see it...

New Asylum Title Announced!

Though nothing's been mentioned over at The Asylum site as of yet, word came via Fangoria on Friday that everyone's favorite studio has a film in the works entitled Battleships - an obvious tie-in to next year's board-game adaptation Battleship from director Peter Berg - and it's going to be written and directed by Thunder Levin, the screenwriter of this year's 200MPH. 

It was Levin himself who spoke to Fangoria, and, as it's their story, rather than rehash the article I'm just gonna send you right to it: Thunder Levin talks to Fangoria

200MPH had some pretty rad action sequences, so knowing that the mind of Mr. Levin is hard at work here hints at explosive promise. No release date or anything like that at this point, but, as usual, as soon that info's made known, it'll be posted here.

3 Musketeers on DVD Today!!!

That's right, my fellow faithfully-committed, today's the days our inner action heroes have been waiting for, the DVD release of The Asylum's take on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told, Alexandre Dumas' 3 Musketeers. 

 
In The Asylum's version, of course - conceived by debut screenwriter Edward DeRuiter and directed by Cole McKay of 200MPH renown - the swords have been exchanged for automatic weapons and the swashbuckling grace switched out for free-running mixed martial arts. Expect rad fight sequences, thrilling chases and crazy explosions, enacted brilliantly by Heather Hemmens, Xin, Michele Boyd, Alan Rachins, David Chokachi and more. I'm still waiting to get my hands on a copy, but the second I do, I'll post my thoughts.

In the meantime, run, don't walk, to your local independent video store, or Netflix, and procure your copy of this sure-to-be action classic post haste!!!

inmate profile: Cole S. McKay

Take a look at the picture up there, a good look: the penetrating stare, the awesome fucking mustache, the jacket; that, ladies and gentlemen, is what a Badass looks like.

Cole S. McKay: stunt man extraordinaire turned director. Kinda like Colt Seavers, but real. Earlier this year he directed 200 MPH, The Asylum's white-knuckle racing flick. His latest project? You guessed it, the upcoming Asylum release 3 Musketeers. 

There isn't a lot of biographical info on Mr. McKay online, but his resume more than speaks for itself. Since 1986 he has served as a stunt man in one capacity or another for 221 films and television productions. 221. Even cooler, know what his first film was? Three Amigos. Uh-huh. Badass.

Other films Mr. McKay defied death in include Star Trek VI, Demonic Toys, Leprechaun, Super Mario Brothers, Lost Highway, Wishmaster 1 & 2, The Devil's Rejects, American Pie Band Camp, a driving double for Kyle Gass in Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, and Cloverfield. He's also worked with The Asylum several times as the stunt coordinator for The Terminators, Ballistica, Titanic II and Battle of Los Angeles. Badass, badass, badass.


McKay started directing in 1988, and among his more notable films are Star Hunter, co-directed by Fred Olen Ray (father of MSvC, Almighty Thor and 2 Headed Shark Attack director Christopher Ray) starring Roddy McDowell and Stella Stevens, and his last non-Asylum film, 2006's Special Ops: Delta Force, which featured Titanic II and Mega Fault's Bruce Davison.

And the best of all this background is that McKay's storied career path has led him to present moment, on the cusp of releasing his second directorial effort for The Asylum, 3 Musketeers, on DVD next Tuesday, October 25th. His next effort is also kinda Asylum-related: he'll be directing Blackgate, a film written by and starring Asylum vet Paul Logan.

inmate profile: Edward DeRuiter

With The Asylum's next release, 3 Musketeers, only weeks away (DVD 10.25.11), it's time to turn the Committed spotlight on the creative talent behind The Asylum's take on Alexandre Dumas' seminal adventure novel. And who better to start with than the bard behind the flick, the one and only Edward DeRuiter.

DeRuiter has had many a mention here on the blog, most often for his work as an actor - he's appeared in five Asylum films to date, including leads in 2002's The Surge (or Source) and this year's Battle of Los Angeles, and supporting turns in The Way of the Vampire, War of the Worlds and 3 Musketeers - but lately it seems all I'm talking about is Edward DeRuiter the writer.

In addition to his work on 3M - which by the trailer looks to be intense, action-packed and laced with levity - DeRuiter also supplied the story behind next year's most anticipated film, 2 Headed Shark Attack, which I then turned into a screenplay. I can tell you from reading him that DeRuiter is a highly-intelligent, detail-oriented writer with a good working grasp of military, martial arts, scientific and technical realms; add to this a biting, sarcastic sense of humor and a keen eye for BIG action, and the result is nothing less than explosive direct-to-DVD cinema. 

My predication? Popular opinion will rate 3 Musketeers the best Asylum action flick to date. Earlier this year, 200MPH boasted some of the best action sequences The Asylum's ever produced, and with that film's director, Cole S. McKay, at the helm of DeRuiter's script, the combination should blow away all expectations.

200MPH on DVD!!! PLus...a New Blog Event!!!

Double -shot of good news today:

First things first, it's Tuesday, which means fresh DVDs have been delivered, and easily the best of the bunch this week is the latest Asylum release, 200MPH, starring Jaz Martin and AnnaMaria Demara, and directed by Cole McKay. If you scroll down but a few inches, you'll find my observation notes on the film, which is well worth rushing to the video store and even trampling a person or two to get.

Secondly, the next Asylum release, Almighty Thor - starring Cody Deal, Richard Grieco and Kevin Nash, written by Eric Forsberg and directed by Christopher Ray - is itself only a few weeks from its May 10th DVD release. However, three days before that, on Saturday the 7th, at 9pm no matter what your North American timezone, the film will get its World Premiere on SyFy. Which means...you guessed it...another Mega-Live Blogfest! Join me that night about half an hour before showtime and watch along with my snarky observations, cumbersome back-information on cast, crew and story, as well as cocktails, a possible theme-meal, and everybody's favorite, a giant Rice Krispie treat I decorate (crudely) in honor of the film. The fun goes down not this Saturday, but the Saturday after, so schedule accordingly.

observation notes: 200MPH

In the vein of the Fast and Furious movies and its own Street Racer, this high-octane gift from the fine folks at The Asylum comes courtesy of writer Thunder Levin and director Cole S. McKay, and tells the story of a young amateur racer (Jaz Martin) who falls into the seedy and dangerous world of illegal street racing following the death of his older brother. 

It's a simple enough plot, but the story isn't the star here; that would be the pulse-pounding, adrenaline-boosting action sequences. And there's a bunch of them, all expertly choreographed and directed. Are they rolling 18-wheelers like F&F? No way, not for the budget, but McKay and his crew stretch their dollars to the max, giving us an array of fast and furious displays of automotive prowess that are worth every penny.

As for the human components of the film, lead Jaz Martin, in one of his first big roles, is spot on right out of the gate as the humbly-over-achieving younger brother just looking to race for the love of cars but thrust into a world bigger, deeper and darker than himself. His character travels through the widest emotional spectrum, and at every band Martin's right there and ready. He sort of reminds me of a younger Adam Scott, which is a good thing. We'll be seeing more of him in the future, I'd bet.

AnnaMaria Demara as Jaz's girlfriend Claudia stands out from the first frame she's in, and as more than just a remarkably pretty face (think Eva Longoria meets Mila Kunis with a dash of Tiffani-Amber Thiessen); she exudes a sultry sort of confidence and a feminine bravado that is as enchanting as everything else about her. Furthermore - and I honestly mean this in the nicest way possible - this girl was born to start a drag race.

Other cast standouts include Hennelly Jimenez as the car-smart and midriff-baring mechanic, Tommy Nash as the ill-fated older brother, Darren Thomas (Born Bad, 2012: Ice Age) as the evil Kayce and, of course, the great Paul Logan (Ballistica, Mega Piranha) as the crooked Officer Flynn.

In terms of story, as mentioned, this is a basic vengeance tale, but a well-executed one that offers a fair amount of detail into L.A. street racing culture, and strippers. Seriously, the majority of female characters in this movie are strippers by trade, including Jaz's girlfriend and mom. Though there are a couple of weird points - sons joking about mom's job as a stripper (keeping in mind both sons are in their 20's, making mom...not), son visiting mom at the strip club and conversing with her while she's topless, some interesting dance montages, and this line: "no, this is me, the man with your balls in his hand," though not actually holding anyone's balls -  but all in all this is a film with a lot of heart for an action flick, more heart, in fact, than most of the F&F films, without sacrificing action. Plus, they drop like fifty f-bombs. Just sayin'.


If you enjoy race films, action films, beautiful women dancing while scantily-clad and neon, I can't see any reason you wouldn't enjoy the hell out of this one. I did. Find it on DVD this Tuesday.

inmate profile: Jaz Martin

Another spotlight on a cast member of the upcoming Asylum release 200MPH, and this time the lead, Englander Jaz Martin. 

A lifelong entertainer, Martin studied drama at Britain's University of Sunderland before making the interesting career shift into owning a wall and floor tiling business. But that acting bug, it's kind of like a chigger: once it gets at you, it gets under your skin and becomes really, really difficult to get rid of; but you know, in a good way. 

So he chucked - or rather, sold - the business and made perhaps the boldest, bravest, most brazen idea of his life: to move to L.A. and try and land an acting career. 

And daggum it if he hasn't gone and done just that.

After only a couple of years kicking around Tinseltown, 2011 is shaping up to be the year of Jaz Martin's big break. Besides the lead in 200MPH, he also scored the lead in Breathe, a short, as well as a role in the ensemble thriller The Shattering, slated for release later this year. 

So between Mr. Martin here and Ms. Demara recently-profiled, 200MPH stands to be the big break for at least two talented newcomers. Here's hoping when April 26th rolls around and 200MPH is in our collective DVD players, they bring the thunder. If the trailer's any indication, they're gonna.

inmate profile: AnnaMaria Demara

As the release date for the next Asylum film, 200MPH, is fast approaching us (no pun intended), I thought it time for the next smattering of inmate profiles, all aimed at the creative talent behind this street-racing epic. First up, quite possibly the hottest thing Canada has ever produced, AnnaMaria Demara:

Hailing from the fine and lovely metropolis of Toronto, AnnaMaria by the grace of god and fate made her way to sunny California where the entertainment industry - having eyes and ears with which to sense greatness - has begun to warmly embrace her. After working for a few years for TV shows like "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Deal or No Deal," "Nip/Tuck" and "Days of Our Lives," AnnaMaria has finally broken into films, and has several lead roles coming up in the course of the next year, including See How They Run with John Savage (Deer Hunter) and Havana Heat with Peta Wilson ("La Femme Nikita").

But the film we're here to talk about is 200MPH; in it AnnaMaria plays Claudia, the smokin'-hot love interest, I'm supposing, of the street-racing, heart-of-gold-bad-boy portrayed by Jaz Martin. I don't like to make crazy predictions (actually I do), but I'm having a "we-knew-her-when" moment here; given Ms. Demara's knock-em-dead, younger-Eva-Longoria looks, if she can act as well as she can pose, she's golden. And from what I've seen of her reel, she can act like crazy. Small surprise here, as The Asylum is typically right on when it comes to casting strong, sexy, smart female leads (Kim Little, Sarah Lieving, Erica Roby, Eliza Swenson, Kristen Quintrall etc. etc. etc.). 

Find out for sure Tuesday, April 26th, when 200MPH hits DVD, and here's hoping this is only the first of several films Ms. Demara will bestow upon we faithfully committed.

Final 200MPH Trailer Arrives

Just a quick note to say the official, final trailer of The Asylum's 200MPH  has arrived and can be viewed here.

inmate profle: Alex Yellen

 

As regular readers of Committed know, in the weeks leading up to the release of an Asylum film I like to throw out a few more inmate profiles than normal, spotlighting the creative talent behind the impending film. As 200mph opens on in only a few weeks, on April 26th, I thought we'd get started. First up: Asylum cinematographer extraordinaire Alex Yellen.

There isn't a lot of info on Mr. Yellen out there, so his work will have to speak for itself, which it more than does:

Yellin has served as cinematographer on fifteen Asylum films, including half of the studio's output last year and a good chunk of their work thus far this year. A sample of his work: 6 Guns, 2010 Moby Dick, Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, Airline Disaster, I Am Omega and 100 Million B.C. What's more, Yellen has racing-cinema experience: he served as cinematographer on The Asylum's last speed thriller, Street Racer.

And as impossible as it may seem, Yellen has somehow found the time for work outside Asylum walls: on both the indie drama Quinceanera and the Leigh-Scott-written, Griff-Furst directed Wolvesbayne he served as the second unit's director of photography.

It's obvious The Asylum trusts this guy's eye quite a bit, and with good reason; for my money, 2010 Moby Dick and 100 Million B.C. are among the best-looking Asylum films. We'll get a nice good look at the work of Yellen not only this April 26th when 200mph is released, but also again next month with the release of Almighty Thor, again in June with the release of 2012 Ice Age and at least one more time this November with the release of Born Bad. And it's probably the safest bet out there that his name will pop up on at least another film or two later in the year.

Asylum Star and Asylum Director Collaborate Outisde the Walls!

Special thanks to Asylum actor and fellow faithfully-committed Ed DeRuiter (The Source, Way of the Vampire, War of the Worlds, Battle of Los Angeles), who emailed this morning with details on an exciting new project just entering production featuring Committed-fave Paul Logan (MegaFault, Mega Piranha, upcoming Ballistica) - who not only stars in the film but also wrote and is producing it - entitled Blackgate. And while there's no involvement by The Asylum, it is set in one. The official synopsis:

"Blackgate Asylum houses the worst of the worst of the criminally insane. It is basically a supermax prison masquerading as a hospital. Out of the 388 patients there, most are your average, mentally disturbed individuals.  Locked up in the high security, penitentiary-style South wing are the Lifers.  All of the murderers, rapists, child molesters, serial killers and sociopaths that have been dubbed 'criminally insane' in order to avoid spending the rest of their lives on death row are now spending their lives here... They get the patients that all of the other prisons can’t handle or don’t want. There have been 38 escape attempts since they opened, none successful.  This is the most secure facility in the country...Until tonight.

Among the Lifers is Dr. Julian Sinclair, a Mensa-level genius who is also a sophisticated sociopath. Sinclair has just been dubbed “sane” by the courts and is due to be transferred to a maximum security prison and straight to death row to await execution.  Sinclair orchestrates an elaborate escape plan which begins with the release of all of the Lifers into the general population with one simple order…kill.

The Lifers make their way through the sedate area and proceed to slaughter everyone in their path. Locked in one of the holding cells, there for observations after his last case, is detective Jake Malone. Malone, unarmed, makes his way through the asylum fighting psychopath after psychopath. He rescues a young doctor, Talia and uses all his special forces training to keep them both alive and find a way to stop Sinclair’s escape plan. In this life or death game of cat and mouse Malone must use his wits, detective and fighting skills to deduce and stop this maniac’s plan before Sinclair and the rest of the killers escape."

Mr. Logan is set to play Jake Malone, the cop caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Furthermore, there's another Asylum connection, as Blackgate is being directed by Cole S. McKay, who only weeks ago finished directed Mr. Logan - as well as Jaz Martin and AnnaMaria De Mara - in 200mph. Blackgate just started pre-production, so there's not much more on this one as of yet, but jump over to the Blackgate blogspot for details as they emerge.

Now that we're a little ways into the new year, we have a more definitive idea of the release dates for the first batch of 2011 Asylum films. Here's what we know:

And that's what we have so far. Still on the docket are 2012 Ice Age, Born Bad and 2 Headed Shark Attack - all of which there's no info on right now besides the titles - but I think we can assume those are the summer/early fall films we can look forward to. And beyond that, there's bound to be another comedy, maybe a horror film for October, who knows? Rest assured I keep my eyes peeled for this stuff, and as soon as I spy details, I'll post 'em up.

1st Images of 200 MPH Hit the Web!

In typical Asylum fast-paced tradition, not a week has passed since the release of the poster for 200 MPH (this guy on the left here) and already we have the first images from the set. From what I can see, this looks to be a sleek, saucy and adrenaline-fueled film. Jaz Martin looks appropriately pretty-boy-renegade and our first good look at Annamaria De Mara reveals she is - as expected - drop-dead hot. The nice surprise among these images is that there appears to be a role for Committed-fave Paul Logan as "a cop with a secret." Awesome. 

200 MPH races onto DVD (I know, I know) April 26th of this year. 

200 MPH Gets a Poster!

And here it is! 

Not more than a week has passed since we first got the details of the latest Asylum production to be announced, and already the poster has been published on the film's info page. I love the colors, the skyscraper background and the hint of sensuality embodied by the single female leg. Cars, night, and short-skirted women - three things dear to every bad boy. 200 MPH drops April 26th, and with a poster already up, shouldn't be too long before we see some set photos.

200 MPH Details Revealed!

So The Asylum today has put up the official page for their upcoming film 200 MPH, originally subtitled Midnight Racers, but that detail hasn't seemed to make the cut here. Naturally there are no photos or a poster as of yet, but there are some tasty deets, including an official synopsis:

"After his older brother's death in a car crash, a young amateur racer is plunged into the harrowing world of illegal street racing, risking his life as he races with a vengeance."


We also get some info on the cast and crew, but this one is looking to be made largely by unknowns, so there isn't a lot of info to go around. But here's what I got:

• director Cole McCay - if it's the right guy, IMDB lists his sole credit as stunts on Columbus Day.
• written by Thunder Levin - Mutant Vampire Zombies from the 'Hood!
• starring Jaz Martin (upcoming The Shattering), AnnaMaria DeMara (one episode of "Nip/Tuck," upcoming Havana Heat with Joey Lawrence and Peta Wilson), Darren Thomas (again, if I got the right guy, upcoming remake of H.G.Wells' Food of the Gods and Welcome to the Jungle) and Hennely Jimenez (who is a mystery to IMDB. The only other info we have on this one is that it hits the asphalt April 26 of this year, and that it probably isn't a sequel to Street Racer like I at one time postulated. Unless it's a sequel like Tokyo Drift is a sequel. Only time will tell.
